Gulf on Fire with Spanish and Reds Sept.

I spent about 5 days down in matagorda from Wednesday till Sunday.
Thursday morning after a few rain showers we took my buddy’s boat out past the jetties and found the gulf almost slick but with rollers. The near shore waters looked like there were bombs being dropped everywhere. we made our way over to the area to find 1,000’s of bull reds schooled up. cast after cast red after red being caught. the good thing I brought my popping gear. the reds were crushing a lure call the Wingman. After catching alot of reds and jacks on heavy gear lightend it up a lot and hooked a 36″+ bull on a 4000 Penn Battle and Texas Toothpick talk about a challenge. my buddy started getting a headache so threw in the towel and headed back in. I think we caught about 15-20 bull reds and 5-6 jacks. crazy fun only got a few pics to busy busting fish.

Fri morning we bust the jetties to a little rougher seas, but no sight of the giant schools. so we took off looking for them and found a two man limit of Spanish. The Texas Toothpick ans sidewinder were our go to lures. we fished until about noon and headed back for lunch. at around 3pm we made our way back out and started to work into some slot reds and trout with a couple bulls mixed in. at 7 we called it and head back to clean all the fish.

Sat. morning we hit the jetties area again this time the reds and jacks are back. we get a couple good fish to the boat after shutting down the engine to drift quietly. then all of the sudden the water erupts all around the boat fish are flying out of the water everywhere. I wish i could of got my phone to take video of it but my screen was wet. It’s been one of the crazyist things i have ever seen. then the schools just seemed to vanish. This time we were only able to get 5-7 bull reds after trying to locate the reds and Spanish for about an hour and a half we headed in. the afternoon bit was bad. at this point it just seemed like the bit was turning off, as the days progressed, and the tide timings changed.

Sunday was a bust the boat fuel pump stopped working just before we broke the jetties. so we called it for the end of the trip and packed up and went home.
